Dear 5th Graders,
     Good morning!  I hope that you enjoyed your three day weekend.  We are beginning the second week of the third quarter.  If you have not returned your signed report card envelope, please turn it in by tomorrow.  Be sure to turn it in to the purple tub.
     Please note that today is a Monday schedule.  Library will be rescheduled.  I will let you know of the date and time.
     After unpacking, making a lunch choice, and getting ready for the day, please begin on the Morning Work described below.  Index cards have already been passed out.  Please use your time wisely and get right to work.  We have an eventful day before us (and historic!!!).

MORNING WORK

On an index card, write at least 3 facts that you know about Inauguration Day.  Share your card with at least 3 other students in your team.  Make sure the person you share with is listening (not unpacking or doing something else).

 

FINISHED with this activity, or at any time today (when finished with all other assignments):  Check out this link about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  You can see pictures from his last year of life, read about him, and take a quiz to see how smart you are.  Happy learning!

The 7 Hat Challenge

·         What do people mean when they say that someone “wears many hats”?

·         The President is someone that wears many hats.  What are some of his responsibilities?  How much does he get paid for all of his hard work?

·         You will play an online game in which you take on the role of future President.  You’ll travel back in time to learn about Presidents from the past.  You will decide which “hat” the President was wearing when a decision was made.  You win the game by collecting all 7 hats.

·         Assessment activity:  The Seven Roles of the President (Scholastic handout) à Turn in when finished.

·         Video follow-up: Discussion in moodle, and quiz (either in moodle or quia)

Representatives from West Middle School (WMS) will perform a concert for the fifth graders, highlighting options for music classes in sixth grade.  This will be followed by a visit to our classroom by the sixth grade counselor.

1).  Read a short article.

2)  Writing activity:  Teams of students will write a paragraph about what facts they learned while reading.  Each individual student will create one, beginning with just a topic sentence (P1).  The paper will then be passed to the next teammate.  He/she will add one detail sentence.  This process continues until the paper returns to the original writer.

3)  Look at examples of exit slips.  Score them together as a class.

4)  Based on criteria, students will complete an exit slip about the topic of the article.

2)   Once approved, you will showcase your similes and metaphors in a Power Point presentation.  Keep in mind…Your presentation is like an Exit Slip for this grammar lesson.  Also, content first, FLUFF later.
